Using Mesoporous Carbon Electrodes for Capacitive Deionization (CDI) of Salt and Brackish Water

چکیده
Capacitive Deionization [2] (CDI [3]) is a water [4] purification process that offers promise in the deionization of salt and brackish water [4]. The process can create potable water [4] out of salt laden water [4] by using electric currents to separate the ions in the solution and attract them to cathode and anode plates. These plates act as filters, drawing salt and other ionized metals out of the source water [4]. When salt is mixed in water [4], it does not remain in its molecular state; rather it ionizes into Na+ cations and Clanions. Other metals also ionize in water [4], making it unsafe to drink. If this ionized, or hard, water [4] is passed through a set of electrodes connected to a direct current, the polarized electrodes will ?grab? the anions and cations in solution.

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a water desalination technology in which salt ions are removed from brackish water by flowing through a spacer channel with porous electrodes on each side. Upon applying a voltage difference between the two electrodes, cations move to and are accumulated in electrostatic double layers inside the negatively charged cathode and the anions are removed by the positi...

Capacitive deionization (CDI) represents a novel electrosorption process for the desalination of brackish water. The CDI working principle depends on the use of porous carbon materials as electrodes. CDI electrodes possess a charged surface that results in adsorption of salt ions by being charged in low voltage and it desorbing the salt ions by applying a reverse potential to the electrodes.
